RF vs IR
WHEN TO USE RF VERSUS IR CONTROL SIGNALS
Hospitals, Large Clinics-Use IR to avoid interference from other radiating devices nearby
ENT Offices-Use RF for easy installation and omnidirectional control
Multiple Sound Rooms-Use IR to avoid cross interference between booths or a combination of (RF) and (IR) to cover multiple rooms
(RF offers up to 4 different channels of operation)
RF Description & Pros/Cons
RADIO FREQUENCY (RF) is a wireless transmission of control signals on a specific radio frequency (433MHz) radiating outward in all directions equally through most materials. Bit coding ensures secure transmission and reduces false positive responses. Approximately 15 meters range.
PROS OF RF
- omnidirectional radiation
- easy installation (one less cable to run)
CONS OF RF
- possible interference from other RF devices
- limited number of operating channels
IR Description & Pros/Cons
INFRA-RED (IR) is a wireless transmission of a control signal using infra-red spectrum light waves to flood the room. IR light cannot pass through solid/opaque objects containing the signals within the space it is used. Approximately 5 meters range.
PROS OF IR
- no possible interference
- the signal is contained within the room
CONS OF IR
- will not go through walls or solid barriers
- must position IR sensors close to remote control emitter
- cannot use multiple IR systems in same room.

Since 2016 all Pehratek Products were designed to operate using both Infra-Red (IR) or Radio Frequency (RF) control signals to provide the greatest installation flexibility and reduction of interference. What’s more, they can be converted in the field from IR to RF and vice versa quickly and easily without replacing the main VRA units should interference from competing technology arise.
